Mel Kirk (@MelKirk)
Upon arrival on the HMS President, we met Mel Kirk who was one of the speakers. Mel works at JAM, a social media agency and was hired because they liked the style of her blogs. It was enjoyable to meet her and we were very grateful that she took her time to do an interview with us.
The first speaker of the night was Mel, who did a presentation about how we have a better platform now for socialising and networking through blogs, Facebook and Twitter. She stated that 75% of the public would believe information from a social network, we are bombarded by ads and that they found a growing trend of unboxing (when someone is the first to review a product). So they decided to get influential people from the web and get them to do skydiving and other extreme sports while reviewing a product. Their results of the video got over 1 million views in just over 3 days, hosted on over 800 blogs, accumulated 20 million unique readers and 23,000 ‘GS II Extreme Unboxing’ mentions.
They shared how it became such a success and advised us to do our homework on the topic and knowing the person’s background and tone of voice. Having knowledge of their interests as well would make your company stand out and develop strong relationships. It’s important to respect not just the writers, but the readers as well. She gave a fun and amusing presentation and left the audience with a good impression.
